Winner of the Singapore Literature Prize Commendation Award, Glass Cathedral’s sensitive depiction of homosexuality in conservative Singapore is a landmark in local literature. This novella was part of a small wave of gay- and lesbian-themed drama and fiction that appeared in Singapore during the early 1990s.
“Glass Cathedral presents, through ‘insider’ knowledge, and with much insight, candour and sensitivity, some of the problems of growing up in Singapore.”
—Robert Yeo, author of The Adventures of Holden Heng
“Koh’s writing style is commendable; it is lucid and clear without compromising the occasional poignant irony. Glass Cathedral has the capacity to move the reader, whatever his or her inclination might be…a welcome in the local literary scene.”
“Koh’s work breaks new ground by exploring relatively uncharted territory in Singapore literature—homosexuality…it carries some confidently written prose that rings with emotional truth.”
—New Straits Times
“[T]he novel bravely delves into an issue that has long been a thorny one for the modernising city-state...Given the time and context of Koh's work, the novel is certainly groundbreaking for its themes and willingness to take on such a controversial topic...the impact and importance of this work perhaps remains as vital as when it first emerged and Epigram [Books]' choice to include it as part of the [Singapore] [C]lassics series certainly calls attention to their commitment to political progressivism and social equality.”
—Stephen Sohn, Asian American Literature Fans
